Emily Tappan earned her B.A. in Studio Art at the University of New Hampshire, after which she moved to Virginia where she began specializing in research and reproduction of 17th and 18th century garments. During this time, she also contributed her costuming expertise at The Virginia Shakespeare Festival, housed at The College of William and Mary. While a graduate assistant at Virginia Commonwealth University, she worked as the assistant on the premieres of Astoria (Portland Center Stage), Feeding the Dragon (Hartford Stage), and Dave: The Musical (Arena Stage), in addition to working regionally in Richmond as a costume designer for The Virginia Repertory Theatre. Since graduating with her M.F.A. in Costume Design, she has continued to work regionally as a costume designer in Virginia and Kentucky, in addition to her work as an illustrator and educator, teaching life drawing and design at Virginia Commonwealth University.
