Carmel Dundon

Lecturer in Technical Design and Production

Carmel is a draper with over 25 years experience in theater, opera, dance, television and film. Having originally trained for a career in the fashion industry she is a maker whose strengths include period and modern forms, and knowledge of a wide range of clothing and costume construction techniques. A summer spent as a stitcher at The New York Shakespeare Festival led to work with costume designer Gabriel Berry, where she cut her teeth working on dance, theater and opera. Carmel also built costumes for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, many regional Opera companies, and for several years worked at The Muppet Workshop on multiple TV shows, two feature films and Sesame Street. She was a draper at The American Repertory Theater for five years, working with designers and artists such as Kasia Walicka – Maimone, Clint Ramos, Rae Smith, and David Zinn. Currently she continues to build pieces for ART, supporting productions and designers such as The Black Clown for Carlos Soto, Fingersmith and All The Way for Deborah Dryden, Nice Fish for Ilona Somogyi, and Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 for Paloma Young. Other clients include Sleep No More NYC designed by David Reynoso, The Boston Ballet’s productions of Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker and Swan Lake with production design by Robert Perdziola, multiple productions for Boston Lyric Opera with designer Nancy Leary, and The Mark Taper Forum’s Vanya & Sonya & Masha & Spike designed by Gabriel Berry. Most recently she is proud to have worked with Academy Award winning designer Jacqueline Durran to create some of the menswear for Little Women.
